Instructions:
Submit an essay of 800-1100 words in length (equivalent to about 4-5 pages) that answers the
following question:
Based on your interpretation of the provided primary-source documents, which article,
“The CIA, the Ouster of Mosaddeq, and the Restoration of the Shah”by Ray Takeyh or
“Coupdunnit” by Christopher de Bellaigue, do you find more persuasive and why? In
answering this question, please be certain to do all the following:
 Briefly describe the social context of the Iran Coup using relevant portions of
Chapter Fifteen and relevant sections of the textbook. What was the political,
economic, and diplomatic situation in Iran in 1953? Why did people like
Roosevelt support a coup in that nation? This background information will
provide the context needed to analyze the articles and documents.
 Summarize and compare the Takeyh and De Bellaigue articles noting how they
differ in their interpretation of the coup. You should limit your summary of each
article to no more than one-hundred-and-fifty words.
 Analyze the primary-source documents to determine which of the two articles you
find more persuasive and why. Please be certain to provide numerous examples
from the documents to support your conclusion. Feel free to use the primary-
source evidence both to demonstrate why you find one article more convincing
and to critique the one you find less persuasive.
Please cite quoted and paraphrased material using simplified parenthetical citations as
follows:
 For the textbook chapter, provide the name of the author and the page number or
numbers as follows: “Operation AJAX had momentous consequences for Iran,
Britain, and the United States,” (Flynn, 34).
 For the articles, please give the author’s name as follows: “In reality, the CIA’s
impact on the events of 1953 was ultimately insignificant” (Takeyh).
 For the primary-source documents, please list the name of the document–
including its reference number if applicable–as follows: “Nassiri walked into
superior force and was arrested” (270. Telegram From the Station in Iran to the
Central Intelligence Agency, August 17, 1953).
SAMPLE OUTLINE
Students who submit well-organized, well-written essays will, all other things being
equal, perform better on this–or any–assignment than those who turn in poorly
organized papers, and I expect that all of the essays I read will be well structured. To
help you craft a well-organized paper, I am providing you with the following simplified
outline. There are many ways to publish this essay, of course and you are welcome to
modify this outline to suit your needs or to ignore it altogether. Each numbered item
represents one or perhaps two paragraphs:
1. Introduction. Your introduction MUST include a thesis statement that is
relevant to the question posed. For a paper of this length, it should generally
be the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.
2. Context. Provide a brief summary of the political, economic, and diplomatic
situation in Iran in 1953. Consider why people like Roosevelt supported a coup.
3. Summarize the Takeyh Article. Provide a brief summary of the Takhey article.
4. Summarize the de Bellaigue Article. Provide a brief summary of the de
Bellaigue article. Note the ways in which his argument differs from Takeyh’s.
5. Assess the Articles Using the Primary-Source Documents. Based on your
analysis, use evidence from the primary-source documents to assess which of
the articles you find more persuasive. This part of your paper can be several
paragraphs long.
6. Conclusion. Like most conclusions, yours should move from a narrow point to a
broader one. What broader lessons have you learned from this assignment?
