This course has you explore a theme against what you learn each week. This demonstrates your ability to connect course concepts (topics) to current world events via the theme.
The theme for this course is “Life, liberty, and pursuit,” based, obviously, on the phrase “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” found in the United States Constitution.
At the time, this phrase was directly meant to be three examples of “unalienable rights” within this important document. The word unalienable describes things, usually human rights, that cannot be taken away, denied, or transferred to another person.
Use the following three headers (one above each paragraph in your journal):
Under each header, write one paragraph connecting your learning this week, on a topic of your choice from the week, with the core theme concept listed in the header above the paragraph, and then connect that to your own current real-world experiences.
As an example, consider that the topic of Deming, the leading management thinker in the field of quality, may be a topic you choose to select. You have freedom to select any topic that was covered during the week that sparked your interest and curiosity to learn. You then may decide to match the concept (topic) of Deming and his research and work to the theme element of Pursuit. Then you need to write a quality paragraph starting with a thesis statement, describing what you will accomplish within the paragraph.
A thesis statement can be a hypothesis, a declarative statement, a position of advocacy, or some other literary preamble that gets to the focal point of what you are trying to accomplish. With the example above it could be:
Deming’s research aligns well with the pursuit of excellence within an organization.
You would then explain how organizations pursue excellence using Deming’s ideas and methods from quality management. Notice, the theme is pursuit, the topic you selected was Deming, and you integrated your own real-world experiences into your narrative, starting with a thesis statement, and then fully writing a well thought-out, logical, and professional paragraph demonstrating what you learned this week via connections to your own experiences and the course content. You do this for all three elements (the headers) of the theme.
In summary, your journal should be one full page, with three headers, one paragraph below each header: no title page and no reference page. The journal should fully and completely be your own original work in your own narrative and words. Remember to check spelling and grammar prior to uploading your journal. Then, submit to the appropriate Journal Dropbox.
