Here at Blank Hospital, we are excited to announce that we partnered with the IDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes, to offer screenings that will detect potential risk factors of Type 1 Diabetes. Our collaboration will assist the JDRF’s mission to create a world without T1D (Type 1 Diabetes), by creating a global screening system. The benefits that these screenings provide are early detection of the disease which reduces the risk of Diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious and potentially fatal complication of T1D; the capability to delay the diagnosis by a few years; and lastly to identify any patients who are at risk and enroll them in clinical trials, treatments, and provide resources and support services. Together, we are leading the fight against Type 1 Diabetes, by offering screening in our pediatric clinics, at no cost to our patients and their families. The therapeutics developed through this research will be groundbreaking and tangibly impactful.
We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to screen the above patient for type 1 Diabetes. The screening was a simple dried blood spot test that was sent to Enable Biosciences, who developed ultrasensitive immunoassays that permit early detection. The results can take up to 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months) to be delivered. The JDRF has provided guidelines when the results do come in. Should the patient test negative and is younger than 15 years old then consider possibly rescreening; if the patient at any age is symptomatic then a repeat is recommended. If the patient tests positive, the JDRF recommends a glucose and a hemoglobin A1C should be checked; along with follow up visits. In addition, they also suggest discussing with the patient research opportunities (TrialNet); monitoring for progression to type 1 diabetes (ASK the Experts); monitor for symptoms.
In the meantime, use this time to review this test with your patients should they have any questions. The JDRF has the T1Detect awareness and education program to assists
families with the much-needed information about T1D.
We know that if we serve our most underserved communities, the impact will reverberate deeply throughout all parts of our society. We’re excited to embark on this journey with you and are sure that you will be interested in collaborating with us to progress Type 1 Diabetes treatment. If you have any patients you think would benefit from our screening, including family members of your patients please do not hesitate to contact us.
