Reasons Data Might be low quality
Information systems could be low-quality because of the cost and materials used. If a company is on a tight budget and in a rush, one might cut some corners with the process of making the systems. (Mastrian and McGonigle, 2021, pp.25) Another thing to remember when talking about information systems is that no matter what, there is always a human element, which means room for human error, whether in the process of creating the information system—or helping to manage the information going into the system. Every information system has a human component to it. These components are called a chief information officer or a chief technical officer. (Mastrian and McGonigle, 2021, pp.25) While information systems are a big help, they can also be a hindrance because, like everything else, there could be an error, or the system could break down, which could cause a significant problem with patient care. Information systems can be unreliable because not every system is linked to one another, which can cause a discrepancy in respect between facilities.
Interoperability and its Importance
Interoperability is the ability of systems and organizations to work together to exchange information. (Mastrian and McGonigle, 2021, pp.431) This is very important in healthcare because it will provide information about other facilities that the client may not have remembered. This allows for better-quality in-patient care and safety. This will also decrease costs because all tests, procedures, and labs will be available and won’t be repeated after completion.
Strategies to Reduce Patient-Related Errors
Many strategies are already in place to reduce the risk of patient-related errors. Some techniques could minimize patient-related errors by ensuring the information system can alert physicians/ workers to routine bloodwork that may have been passed under normal circumstances. Or an alert for parameters on different medications.
